Property Tax Relief

North Carolina property tax relief for disabled veterans

North Carolina excludes the first $45,000 of appraised value of a qualifying disabled veteran's permanent residence from property tax, for a veteran discharged under honorable conditions. It is set out in N.C. General Statute § 105-277.1C. It is a partial exclusion, not a full exemption as in Virginia and Maryland.

  • A qualifying veteran's character of service at separation was honorable or under honorable conditions, and the veteran has a VA certification of a service-connected, permanent, and total disability, or has received VA specially adapted housing benefits under 38 U.S.C. § 2101.
  • The statute sets no income limit for this exclusion.
  • A surviving spouse of a qualifying disabled veteran who has not remarried may also claim it.

How to apply: Applications go to your county tax assessor, generally on NCDOR Form AV-9 with the veteran's disability certification (Form NCDVA-9).

State Programs

North Carolina first-time home buyer and down payment assistance

The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) is the state's housing finance agency and the primary source for North Carolina first-time home buyer loans and down payment assistance. Eligibility, income limits, and availability are set by NCHFA, so check its pages directly.

For the VA funding fee table, who is exempt, and how VA loan limits work, see the North Carolina VA loan guide. For who can pay what on a VA purchase, see VA loan commission rules, explained.

How VroomBrick Works

How VroomBrick works for North Carolina military families

We’re a technology platform, not a brokerage. Here is what the platform gives you, whether you are buying with a VA loan or selling ahead of a PCS move.

Licensed closing attorney

An independent licensed attorney handles the contract, title review, and settlement. VroomBrick does not negotiate contracts or represent you.

Showing agents and a dashboard

Showing agents get you into homes, and every milestone, document, and deadline sits in one transaction dashboard.

Remote closing and POA support

Support for remote closings and power of attorney, for when orders move you before the closing date does.

The fee

Whether you’re buying or selling, VroomBrick charges a 1% technology fee for the platform, paid by the seller at closing. You don’t pay an agent commission on the side VroomBrick works with. On a $400,000 home, a 1% technology fee is $4,000. If an agent on your side charged 3%, that would be $12,000, a difference of $8,000. Commissions are negotiable, so your number depends on what you’d have paid.

On a VA purchase, the seller pays the 1% fee at closing, and VA rules decide which charges the veteran may pay; your lender confirms how each charge appears on the Closing Disclosure.
